Retro Reads

Ah, January. The holidays are long gone and the commitment to our resolutions is flagging. And for those of us lucky enough to live on the East Coast or in the Midwest, the pernicious polar vortex has meant dwindling temperatures, icy roads, and general malaise. To put it bluntly, there hasn’t been much to tempt us to go outside.

The Dawning

Luckily, we picked a Retro Read packed with enough adventure, romance, and dystopian weirdness to keep us sane. Judy Griffith Gill’sThe Dawningelicited a variety of responses among our Retro Readers. (Is it sci-fi? Or romance? Or somewhere in between?)

Ruth noted that Gill “wove a really intriguing dystopian future into a compelling thriller” but found that “the romance between the hero and heroine really takes a backseat in this story.”  Andrea concurred and admitted that she is no fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, but liked venturing “outside [her] comfort zone every now and then.”

The Bleeding Heart

In February, we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day wholeheartedly with The Bleeding Heart by Marilyn French, a wrenching love story about two American expats who meet on a train in England—forever altering the courses of their lives.
